A message from an unwanted guest

A message can be conveyed in many subtle ways: the wave of a hand, the glance of eye or the parade of a Turkmen cockroach.

The Guardian reports that while watching the 9 o’clock evening news, Turkmenistan’s president, Kurbanguly Berdymukhamedov, along with countless Turkmen viewers watched as a single cockroach marched, unnoticed across the studio table. The news program was rebroadcast again - complete with cockroach - at 23:00.

For Kurbanguly Berdymukhamedov, the cockroach’s presence was not to be taken lightly, the next day 30 employees of the state-run TV service were fired. One should never underestimate the high-level influence of a cockroach’s message.
